Appa sherpaThis Spring season Everest has observed a huge surge in the number of climbers reaching the summit. A total of 86 mountaineers have climbed Everest, one of the highest numbers so far. And this time also there have been a few records made.

The legendary Appa Sherpa broke his own previous record by ascending Everest 18th time. He successfully reached the top on May 22. Although he has repeatedly spoken of retiring from commercial climbing, this year Appa wanted to draw world’s attention to the effect of global warming on the melting of Himalayan glaciers.

Nepali Min Bahadur Sherchan, aged 76 years, became the world’s oldest person to summit Everest. Shresha has already climbed smaller peaks before including 5,844m Mt. Nayakhanga Peak in 2006.

In another record, Australian Mother Cheryl Bart and her 23 year old daughter Nikki became the first such pair to climb Everest on May 24. Earlier Cheryl radioed back to the Base Camp saying “I am on the top of the world. The sun is just rising and it is just the most glorious spectacle ever, any time. The pair has already climbed Aconcagua mountain, McKinley-Denali, Kilimanjaro, Elbrus, Vinson Massif and Moutn Kosciuszko in five continents. The First Inclusive Women Sagarmatha  Expedition 2008 of 10 Nepali women Summiteers has also successfully climbed Everest this season.

The first person to scale Everest this Spring season was Mountaineering Leader Namgyal Sherpa. 44 years old Swiss climber Giyani Golch sadly died during his climbing feat on Everest.
