An alternate trek route to worlds fifth highest mountain
There is a search going in Nepal to open up a new trekking route that passes and touches the Makalu (8,463m), the fifth highest mountain in the world. The trekking trail currently used by trekkers, mountaineers and visitors to Makalu Barun National Park is in dilapidated state, unfit and too risky for tourists to tread on. A local committee has been formed recently to carry out research and identify possible alternatives.

For years trekkers have been using a single trail for advancement and retreat. The other option especially for mountaineers and trekkers is to use helicopter service while returning. Once a new short trail opens in the region, more trekkers and visitors are likely to visit the region and increase revenue on local level.

The Makalu trek route experiences snowfall for most of the year, attracting trekkers only during summer and spring season. The Makalu-Barun national park is rich in biodiversity and is home to some of rare species including snow leopard and red panda.
